Tummy Tuck Surgery

What is a lipoabdominoplasty?

A lipoabdominoplasty is the latest advance in tummy tuck surgery. It is an operation to comprehensively rejuvenate the abdomen. It shapes and sculpts the tummy and tightens up the abdominal wall, which is often stretched by pregnancy or weight-gain.

How does it differ from a Traditional Abdominoplasty?

A lipoabdominoplasty (“Brazilian Tummy Tuck”) is an operation that combines all of the advantages of a traditional tummy tuck with the added benefit of comprehensive liposuction to the entire abdomen. A lipoabdominoplasty is safer and less invasive than a traditional abdominoplasty whilst producing better results.

The traditional operation involves mobilising the skin of the entire abdomen, removal of the excess skin in the bikini line and closure of the skin under tension. This mobilisation has the effect of interrupting the deep blood supply to the skin which comes from the abdominal muscles. For this reason, it isn’t safe to combine liposuction to the abdomen at the same time. Therefore, fat deposits cannot be effectively addressed at the same time as a traditional abdominoplasty.

In lipoabdominoplasty, the skin is mobilised by liposuction to the entire abdomen, which sculpts and slims the whole abdomen and the hips and flanks. This has the additional advantage of mobilising the skin to allow removal of excess skin in the bikini-line.

What are the advantages of lipoabdominoplasty compared to Traditional Abdominoplasty?

  1. Better sculpting of abdomen - a lipoabdo produces better sculpting of the flanks, a flatter tummy and smoother hips than traditional Abdominoplasty.
  2. Reduced complications – 90% of the blood supply to the skin of the tummy wall is preserved in lipoabdominoplasty. This means wound healing problems are extremely rare, much rarer than with traditional Abdominoplasty.
  3. Faster recovery – The surgery is about 30% quicker to perform, which means smaller risk of complications. Patients are usually completely healed by 7 days, drains are removed the morning after surgery and patients mobilise without the annoyance of drains. The swelling rapidly reduces in a few weeks.

What is the recovery time?

Patients normally stay in hospital for 1-2 nights before discharge wearing a corset type garment. They are usually mobile around the house for the first week and often return to work during the second week following surgery. Heavy lifting and exercise should be avoided for 6 weeks after surgery.

  • Treatment Time : 2 hours. 1-2 night hospital stay.

  • Recovery Time : Discomfort 3-7 days, time off work 2-3 weeks

  • Results Duration : 12 weeks until final result, scars improve over 18 months

  • Price : From £7,900

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  1. Under general anaesthetic, your abdomen will be cut in order for the surgeon to access the skin tissue and muscle inside.
  2. Once the contouring has taken place, you will be stitched up and it’s possible you’ll be hooked up to drainage tubes for a few days.
  3. After the bruising and swelling has gone down, you will have a noticeably flatter stomach, with greatly reduced excess skin.

FAQs

The operation lasts 2 to 3 hours and you’ll be in hospital for 1-2 nights. Expect to be off work for 2-3 weeks.

You will have general anaesthetic. Your loose, lower abdominal skin will be removed and your slack tummy muscles will be tightened and returned to the midline. Stretch marks will be moved downwards and hidden as the skin is stretched.

A seroma is a fluid collection under the skin which commonly occurs following traditional Abdominoplasty – occurring in around a third of patients. The treatment involves repeated needle- drainage as an outpatient. Seroma is extremely rare after lipoabdominoplasty – another advantage of the Brazilian Tummy Tuck technique.
